I see my recent portraits as visual charms that cast spells out into the world to effect change. My subjects are self-possessed women, who often look directly at the viewer from a position of power. They hold their space; they show how we can act against tides that threaten to overwhelm us, divide us, hold us back, and silence us. 

My women have all kinds of stories to tell. Their lives differ, but they are bound by a common courage: the audacity to be themselves in a world that demands compliance. Each depiction I make is a love letter to my subject, to her unflinching refusal to be made small. It honors the truth that survival is at once fierce and tender.
